BCT Breastfeeding

Most of us would agree that breastfeeding is the best way to feed a baby. For some women and babies breastfeeding comes very easily, for some it takes a little practice and for yet others it can be something of a rocky road. A lot of women need some help to get started with breastfeeding – and the good news is that in the Basel area there is a lot of help and support available to you.

All the hospitals and birth houses in the Basel area are pro-breastfeeding, encouraging and helping women to get started and supporting them through any difficulties that may arise. If the need arises you may be referred to a Lactation Consultant IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) for specialist help and support.

Once you are at home you will continue to be supported by your visiting midwife for up to 56 days. Some midwives are also Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) or alternatively you can request to see one for a personal consultation. Three (3) consultations are covered by your insurance.

In the BS/BL area there are many Lactation Consultants that speak English. For a list of all IBCLC see the following website:

You can also contact La Leche League Basel, an international voluntary breastfeeding support Organisation. They offer support via email, phone or meetings in your area. For more information see the following websites:
