Easy Stir Fry Beef Dish, with Oyster Sauce – A Dinner You Can Whip Up Quickly
Text by Azura Rubio
Do you have a wok and a bottle of oyster sauce lying around in your kitchen?
Well then, you can make this delicious stir-fry dish. It doesn’t take long to prepare—probably one of the reasons why it’s a popular offering for lunch or dinner in Malaysia.
BCT members coming from or acquainted with the Far East will likely have this on rotation at home. Hence, some might even consider it too simple to warrant a written recipe (eyeballing is sufficient).
Conversely, others might view this as a novelty. For instance, my husband’s Spanish family was unfamiliar with Asian food until a few years ago. They still find this dish (and different curries) exotic. But scrumptious. That is, on the rare occasion when Mother In Law takes a break and releases her vice-like grip on the kitchen.
Don’t fancy eating meat?
Go ahead and substitute the beef with broccoli or cauliflower.
Ingredients:
- 3 tbsp neutral vegetable oil
- 500g lean beef steak – sliced
- 1 tbsp light soy sauce
- 4 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 cup water
- 1 tbsp grounded black pepper
- One red pepper/capsicum, diced
- One green pepper/capsicum, diced
- Spring onions – chopped for garnishing
Sliced finely/blended items:
- Five shallots
- Two garlic cloves
- 5 cm ginger
- One large onion
Method:
First, heat your wok. Then add in the oil.
Then, toss in the blended items and stir for a few minutes.
Once the mix is fragrant and soft, add the beef pieces.
Fry them until they look tender and brown.
Then, add the oyster sauce, soy sauce, black pepper and water and stir.
Throw in the peppers, stir for a few more minutes and remove the wok from the heat.
Serve on a big plate, topped with spring onions together with a big bowl of rice or noodles.
